BUILDING MATERIALS - PROJECT 2

Natural and artificial materials and products used for the construction and repair of buildings and structures. The many different purposes and operating conditions of buildings and structures account for the variety of demands placed on building materials and for the great diversity of available materials.
Two basic categories of building materials are recognised :

• General purpose materials : cement, concrete, and timber

It is used in the construction of various types of structures.

• Special purpose materials: acoustic, insulating, and refractory materials.

Depending on the degree of preparation before use, building materials are conventionally classified as building materials proper, such as binders and aggregates, and structural components, which are prefabricated units and elements to be installed in buildings at the construction site , such as reinforced concrete panels, toilet stalls, and door and window units.

PROJECT 2  - 

MATERIALITY OF SPACE: AN EXPERIENTIAL EXPLORATION

In this project, we are required to form a team of 5 members and select a site to visit. We have to observe the building material in the site that we choose and to analysis it. Our group choose to go to a theme hotel call container hotel in Kuala lumpur . The hotel room is generally all made by container. We have been attracted by the extraordinary building materials in their website. Hence, we decide to visit the container hotel.

Learning Outcomes : 

1. Able to identity different building materials used on buildings.
2. Understand the application and usage of specific building materials.
3. Understand the properties of different building materials.
4. Able to reflect the atmosphere of the building through group mood board.
5. Able to express thoughts and feelings of the building with context of the building materials.

PROJECT 2A - GROUP

For the group part, we are required to create 3 boards which are 1 mood board and 2 A2 board explaining the identification and application of the material used for the space in the building.Firstly, we discussed to make the same theme and elements to make the board which using a lots of rectangle and triangle shape to form in the board.

PROJECT 2B - INDIVIDUAL

For the individual part, we have to choose a space that is in the site. We also decide to do the same layout to make our own board. For me, I choose the back alley of the container hotel. The space and materials and the feel is appeal for me to do research.

Through this project, I understand more types of building materials. I also figure out that the appropriateness of material used in context several factors occupancy, concept, climate. I get to understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building when conducting this project.
