BUILDING MATERIALS - PROJECT 1

Natural and artificial materials and products used for the construction and repair of buildings and structures. The many different purposes and operating conditions of buildings and structures account for the variety of demands placed on building materials and for the great diversity of available materials.
Two basic categories of building materials are recognised :

• General purpose materials : cement, concrete, and timber

It is used in the construction of various types of structures.

• Special purpose materials: acoustic, insulating, and refractory materials.

Depending on the degree of preparation before use, building materials are conventionally classified as building materials proper, such as binders and aggregates, and structural components, which are prefabricated units and elements to be installed in buildings at the construction site , such as reinforced concrete panels, toilet stalls, and door and window units.

Project 1 “SPACE OUT - THE MATERIAL CUBE” 

Learning Outcomes :

1. Able to select appropriate building materials for individual model.
2. Able to state reasoning for the choice of building materials.
3. Understand the usage and application of the building materials.
4. Critical thinking and reasoning skills.

The task of this project is to design and build two cube that using two different materials which are paper and wood. Besides, the cubes have to be defined a volume of 12”x12”x12” inch space. We are asked to produce with this one material and a fastening system such as glue, nails, screw and others. 
I have chosen satay stick as my material for the wooden cube. As for my paper cube, I have chosen to use mounting board.

Cut the mounting board into pieces in order to make small cube with 2cm x 2cm x 2cm.

The tiny cubes are done.

Make a "Staircase" as interior forms.

Each of the satay have to be measure accurately and glued tidy.

Through this project, I learnt to recognize more kind of materials. In addition, I learn how intrinsic forms, limitations and boundaries of a material factor in a design process. I am also able to work effectively with a material in line with design requirements and also able to express a material within its contextual application.
